K Starts Pre-School and Mommy Cries
Filed Under Older Mommy | 7 Comments
K starts pre-school in two weeks.
I wasn’t going to send her, but the school I’ve had her on the wait list for called with a spot open. So I’ve been getting health records, crayons and the mandatory princess backpack.
Its a public Montessori, but out of our district, so there is a thirty minute drive time every morning. Still, the schools got a great reputation, and after she turns five it’ll be free.
We went to meet the teach the other day. K shyly, said hi to teacher, and went off to play. Thirty minutes later I had to drag her out of the classroom.
The morning procedure is much like any other pre-school around the USA. I’ll take her to the outside door, sign her in with a teacher and kiss her goodbye. K and I practiced the routine.
“Goodbye K, have a wonderful time time at school today honey.”
“Goodbye Mommy, have a nice writing time mommy.”
Kisses all around and I pretended to leave.
When I turned around like, oh, one second later, K was talking to another four year old girl who had come to meet the teacher.
She’s ready for school.
That first day we’ll start our new routine. We’ll get up earlier than we’ve become accustomed, rush around to get ready and
drive thirty minutes to school. Along with way we’ll lift our butts as we drive over ‘crocodile lake’. We’ll make up songs and find letters on the billboards.
I’ll take her up to the door and kiss my little girl goodbye .
Goodbye K, have a wonderful time time at school today honey.
Goodbye Mommy, have a nice writing time mommy.
Then I’ll walk the two blocks to the library with my laptop where I’ll write.
And wait.

How I Came to be a Mid-Life Mommy.

This post is part of a virtual Tea Party, hosted by Tea Party Girl Jenny.
~~~~~~~~~
One morning, sometime after my forty-third birthday I realized I wanted to be a Mom.
The clock never ticked in my twenties or thirties like it does for some women. Suddenly, on a nice quiet walk by myself, I heard this alarm. Loudly.
CHILDREN. NOW. IT’S ALMOST TOO LATE!
The Downside of Being Old
Filed Under Older Mommy | 2 Comments
One downside of being an older mom:
K came to me today and asked:
“Are you old Mommy? ”
“Yes” I replied.
“Don’t go live with the angels Mommy, It’s not your turn.”
I can’t stand the possibility that someday, I won’t be here for her.
I hope I live to be 100 years old.
The Wisdom of MidLife
Filed Under Older Mommy | Leave a Comment
Over on my other blog, (Live Holistically) I got a great comment on this post My Crunchy Granola Preschool Holistic Daughter and Macdonald’s.
Basically I was writing about balance and organic food, and fun and McDonald’s and where do you draw the line between eating healthy and cultural attitudes about McDonalds.
Anyway, Karen left this comment:
At a wonderful new mother support group I attended in Bondi after the birth of my first child, the discussion turned to a heated one on the pros & cons of immunization. Later a young, first time mum declared she would only feed her child organic food. Many agreed with her enthusiastically. An older woman sitting next to me sighed. Hers was a mid-life surprise 3rd baby. She leaned over to me and said in voice full of wisdom and exhaustion, “I’m just glad my 16yr old daughter isn’t on heroin.” It is 8 years later and I still think of her when I need balance.
Mid-Life Mommy
Filed Under Older Mommy | 2 Comments
There isn’t anything unusual about being a midlife mommy, except that I’m 48 years old with a three-and-a-half year old daughter. You do the math.
As it turns out, I’m not alone in this older mommy thing. Not by a long shot. Most of us worked hard to be moms at this stage - through adoption or extra medical procedures. And we love it. I’ll be sharing the zaniness of maintaining a semblance of a career from home, (yea right!), while my three-going-on-fifteen year old daughter alternates between “Help me, Mommy, Help me!†to “Let go, Mommy, Let go.â€
Those of you with children know what I mean.
Motherhood at Forty Four!
Filed Under Older Mommy | 7 Comments
My mom and my daughter.
Who knew being a mom would be so much fun? If I’d known that motherhood was such a joy I wouldn’t have waited until my forties to be a mom.
My mother knew of course.
When I was twenty-five and married for two years, I remember her asking when she’d be a grandma. She smiled and said “hint hint.â€
I blew her off as I was much too busy building a business and selling stuff.
She’d gently remind me that being a mom was one of the most rewarding experiences of her life.
Yea whatever.
When I was thirty-five and married for twelve years, my mother asked if it wasn’t time we had children now. She was still smiling but the ‘hint hint’ was replaced by a bit of concern over her brow, as if she knew something important and I just wasn’t getting it.
Was she confused about my choices? I had a wonderful career! Oops, my phone was ringing. Gotta go mom.
When I turned forty, I had a big blow out party with all my friends and family and I overheard my mom mention that ‘Only children were missing’.
Then a week later: “Do you think you’ll ever have children?
Thank you Mom for all your concern, I must rush off now………….
( humm…. Just what was that important meeting I went to?)
A few years later after having a clock that never ticked for me, an alarm went off in my head. It was so loud I woke up babbling to my husband of many years. “Children, it is time for children.â€
Now, I’m forty-eight with an almost three and a half year old daughter. It has taken me over an hour to write this short blog post as she keeps coming to me, interrupting me. First, singing her ABC’s, then to point out a bug on the floor. Eeeeekkk she shrieked. Get the bug. Eeeeeeek.
Sensing my slight agitation that I was trying to write with an eeeking girl in the room she threw her arms around me and yelled in my ear. Happy Mothers Day Mom!
My mom tried to tell me.
Happy Mothers Day to you, Mom.
Married Twenty Six Years Oh My!
Filed Under Older Mommy | 2 Comments
Yesterday was my twenty-six wedding anniversary. It boggles my mind to think about being married for that many years, but I am.
Hubby and I got a babysitter, (Thank you Susan!) and went out to the Mona Lisa fondue restaurant for dinner. It is a wonderfully romantic place where you eat four courses and drink lots of wine.
Years ago I was a pretty strict vegetarian. And a chocoholic. I would stick my nose up at meats and gobble chocolate until every last drop of sauce was licked from the plate.
Maybe it is age or wisdom or a mellowing of attachment to beliefs, but now I’ll eat an occasionally piece of meat and leave chocolate on the plate.
Last night I enjoyed the dinner. Fish, chicken, meats and sausage were all grilled and enjoyed with dipping sauces. I blessed the food and didn’t feel guilty about eating meat. I still believe that for the most part we should honor animals, and for our health eat less meat. But I don’t have to be evangelistic whipping myself into a frenzy and glaring at meat eaters.
And I’m happy to say that I also enjoyed some lovely milk chocolate dipping sauce, but I wasn’t compelled to eat more than a few bites.
It is a wonderful feeling to let go of addiction.
Other comments sent via email in response to a survey about this film:
An 83-year- old woman begins to discover her freedom. Living alone for her is a vital part of her life.
Evocative, haunting, mystical.
Such passion, a delight in her process and her life, a nostalgia for New Mexico, the desert in general, the mountains, and its people.
How art can overtake a soul. Better yet, how art that’s already in the soul can spring free when allowed to do so.
The presentation of a woman artist who discovers her inner artist way to late in her life. A woman who accepts herself for who she is and for what she can yet become. It’s her world and she’s in charge.
(These men didn’t want their last names used on the web for fear of looking “Artsy”!)
“Woman as Butterfly” is a truly motivational documentary film of the life of Ann Saint John Hawley.
This is the creative journey of a mother of six who finds herself in her 70’s with her children and lifelong partner gone. But instead of shrinking from life, she blossoms, relishing her freedom and coming into her own. Ann is aging very gracefully and without a hint of regret about raising her six children and looking after her dying husband, she now commits this time late in her life to herself and her art. Ann dances Butoh, paints, and has embraced printmaking. Woman as Butterfly is a great inspirational gift for mom, women, sister and others interested in aging issues, Butoh dance, painting, art and inspirational, motivational women. Now in her 80’s, she paints, dances and drums, and through her actions, motivates us to follow our own dreams. This film is a great inspirational gift for mom, sister, friends, those nearing retirement, women over 50. This present for yourself or others is available on VHS, Video, DVD.
